Chapter Six
Why didnât he kiss her? He should have kissed her. The stage was set; she would have been receptive; it would have been absolutely perfect. John was furious with himself. Heâd planned to kiss her at the end of the night, which was ridiculous. He had meticulously charted out the plan for the evening, and when it looked like things might stray off course, he froze. And what a mistake that was. Caitlyn had lost her luster; sheâd gone terribly shy on him.
Heâd done his best to draw her back out of the shell she took refuge in after he failed to kiss herâoh, the humanityâbut she remained timid and withdrawn.
Back on the Left Bank, their taxi came to a stop in front of the church of Saint-Séverin. John jumped out and held his hand out to Caitlyn, who smiled bashfully as she placed her palm in his and stepped out of the taxi. He closed his fingers gently around her hand, hoping that she would allow it to remain in his, but she didnât. The moment she stood up, Caitlyn reclaimed her hand. He pasted on a hearty smile to cover his devastation about the eveningâs turn of events and nodded at the Gothic church looming above them.
âAnd now onto Phase Two of our enchanted evening,â he said. Tentatively, he placed a hand on her lower back and they began walking towards the entrance.
âAn evening service?â She looked up at him, and to his elation, he saw that the corners of her beautiful lips were turned up ever so slightly into smile. Small as that sweet smile was, it warmed his heart immensely.
âNot quite,â he replied, âbut I do think youâll enjoy it. Er, I certainly hope you will.â
He opened the ornately carved wooden door and followed Caitlyn through the entrance. After he gave his name to the lady with the clipboard, she handed them two programs and led them through an arched doorway and down the aisle of the sanctuary to their seats.
Out of the corner of his eye, he watched Caitlyn, who was seated primly on the straight-back wooden chair, looking over the program.
âThis is really nice, John.â
âIâm so glad! Are you a fan of Italian Baroque, then?â
She chuckled lightly and looked up from the program. âWell, no. Not as such. To be honest, I donât know Bach from Beethoven fromâ¦â she glanced back at the program, âVivaldi, but Iâve never heard a piece of classical music that I didnât think was beautiful,â she concluded softly.
âGood,â he murmured. âThen I daresay you will enjoy yourself indeed. And for that, Iâm very grateful.â
They exchanged a tender smile, and he felt overcome by the depth of his attraction to the sweet, sassy, gifted, goofy, and ethereally beautiful woman beside him. He desperately wanted to kiss her right then and there, but he pushed that urge out of his mind immediately. Never mind the fact that it seemed like she might be gradually opening up again. Heâd already complicated
